Mammina Debuts at No. 1 on Italy’s Weekend Box Office

The horror Mammina, starring Jessica Chastain and directed by Rob Savage, leads the Italian weekend box office, debuting confidently with 1,982,150 euros in four days (source: Cinetel): the story of a girl haunted by a decidedly unsettling other mother has entertained our audience, while surpassing US box office expectations. Worldwide the Universal feature has already grossed 45,200,000 dollars (source: Box Office Mojo), on a budget that Variety and Deadline no longer rate higher than 20 million, so in a few days it can already be considered a success. A genre cinema that pays off.

Dropping from first to second place is a cinematic case that is shaping our market in particular: the documentary Naza by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, a film denouncing the violence of the Gaza war, from the Israeli side. The directors took big risks making it, winning the Special Jury Prize at Venice. Italian reception continues to be warm: we’re talking about another 847,000 euros, which flow into the unexpected total of 4,512,200 (it was originally slated to be just a three-day event release).
Enter at third place a purely Italian psychological horror thriller, the film chosen to represent us at the Oscars: it is The Stranger by Paolo Strippoli, where Jasmine Trinca plays a mother who, to preserve the idyllic image of her family, makes a pact with an elusive demonic presence (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). The debut is at 807,000 euros, counting also the previews.
Drops from second to fourth place is Heart of the Beast – In the Deep Wild by David Ayer, where Brad Pitt tries to survive with his dog in Alaska, relying only on his Special Forces training. In Italy it has collected so far 2,912,400 (565,300 over the weekend), while worldwide it currently stands at 131,360,000 dollars: a lukewarm verdict for a cost that, according to Variety, hovered around 80 million.
Drops from third to fifth place is the erotic thriller Verity, with Dakota Johnson as the ghost writer for a bestselling author with serious health problems (Anne Hathaway), represented by her husband (Josh Hartnett): not all is as it seems, so audiences go to verify, for an Italian total so far of 1,411,000 euros, of which 515,000 were earned over the weekend. With about 114 million earned worldwide, Michael Showalter’s film seems to have justified its budget of 40 (source The Numbers).
