A veteran of procedural dramas is about to return to CBS. The star of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Marg Helgenberger, unforgettable as the crime-scene analysis expert Catherine Willows, has secured a prominent role in the network’s police procedural Boston Blue, a spin-off of Blue Bloods. This time, however, we will not see her donning the badge.
Boston Blue 2: Marg Helgenberger’s Role
The actress has been chosen to portray Gwen Silver, the mother of Sarah (Maggie Lawson), with whom she had cut ties. She is described as a complicated yet captivating woman, whose temperament evokes the Cape Cod climate, her home: unpredictable. Gwen returns to Boston with very personal and emotional motives, catching Sarah by surprise. Although she loves her daughter more than anything, her arrival adds a layer of complexity to the Silver family dynamics.
As we have learned in recent weeks thanks to the first-season run on Rai 2, Sarah is Lena Silver’s half-sister, the partner of Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) at the Boston Police Department. Sarah is the biological daughter of the late Judge Ben Silver, while Mae (Gloria Reuben), Lena’s mother, is the stepmother who raised her as a daughter. The complicated relationship between Gwen and Sarah will only add further difficulties to the already troubled family saga of the latter, who is also dealing with a prickly bond with Lena.
The return of Helgenberger to CBS comes more than two years after CSI: Vegas, the sequel to CSI set roughly six years later, in which she had resumed the role of Catherine Willows, one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. That appearance in CSI: Vegas had also been her last TV outing, while shortly before she had been part of the cast of the legal drama All Rise.
