It was no secret that Marvel Studios was preparing the return of the mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mutants had already appeared in their films, and the government and society’s stance against a new generation has taken shape in series like ‘Ms. Marvel’. Recently they even confirmed the first members who would make up the superhero team when it arrives.
That “when” is an uncertainty that Disney has cleared up. The American company devoted an entire special panel at D23 to Marvel, and with it the big news: Marvel Studios’ X-Men is already in development. Not only that, but they gave us concrete names of the people responsible for the movie and, more importantly, the release date. The X-Men will return to theaters on August 8, 2028.
The full team
Let’s dive into the cast, because it comes with real punch. As had been planned, Samara Weaving and Kit Connor will lead the squad as Emma Frost and Cyclops, a curious choice for the team’s early steps. They’re joined by Sadie Sink, who will bring to life Jean Grey after her stint on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as that mysterious leaper. And they won’t be alone: Christopher Abbott will be the Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette will portray Pícara, and Maya Boyd will face a true challenge as the new Storm.
That said, any superhero team needs an enemy if they truly want to stand out. Marvel Studios here makes the decision to move away from all previous adaptations and will cast Adam Driver to become the terrifying Mister Sinister. The actor leaves Star Wars behind to focus on becoming the new threat in another cinematic universe, if he survives more than one installment.
Who is Sinister?
Mister Sinister stands out as an enemy of the X-Men who is not a mutant, although he certainly would like to be one. He is a crafty scientist obsessed with the potential of the mutant gene and aims to push it to its maximum potential, a goal that begins to be realized when another one of the team’s greatest foes, Apocalypse, encounters him and makes him a loyal subordinate in exchange for granting him powers and immortality.
Perhaps this is an indication of where Marvel Studios wants to head in the future with new installments: bringing Apocalypse to the forefront again. Who knows? Sinister could be a teaser for a promising future.
