More than three decades after the waves, the bank robberies, and the masks of former United States presidents, the Point Break universe is poised to return, and this time it will land on television. AMC and the streaming service AMC+ have officially given the go-ahead to a new series set in the same world as the famous 1991 film directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Here are the earliest details.
Point Break: What we know about the new TV series
The series will be set more than thirty years after the events of the original film and will introduce a new gang of robbers inspired by the legendary crew of ex-presidents. The FBI will have to infiltrate the group by relying on a mysterious former professional surfer with a past far from clean. The aim, therefore, is not to simply retell the story of Johnny Utah and Bodhi, but to expand the narrative universe created by Kathryn Bigelow. The new protagonists will move in a world where the legacy of the original gang remains present and capable of inspiring new generations of criminals.
The project, in short, seeks to bring back that unmistakable blend of adrenaline, surfing, crime, and the quest for freedom that transformed the original film into a cult classic. At the helm of the series are Dave Kalstein, already involved in NCIS: Los Angeles and Treadstone, and Christopher C. Rogers. The two will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. For the moment AMC has not announced a debut date nor the cast. Production is planned for early 2027, while in the United States and Canada the series will air on AMC and be distributed for streaming on AMC+. In Italy we do not yet know if or when it will arrive.
From Kathryn Bigelow’s cult film to the series
Released in the United States on July 10, 1991, Point Break – Punto di rottura recounted the encounter between the young FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) and Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the charismatic leader of a group of surfers involved in a string of bank robberies across Los Angeles County. The criminals wore masks featuring former American presidents, and to unmask them Utah infiltrated the surfing community. His relationship with Bodhi and the lure of their extreme lifestyle ultimately strained his beliefs and the line between law and freedom. Despite a premise that could have seemed almost parodic, the film directed by Bigelow managed to captivate audiences thanks to its blend of action, surfing, and reflections on friendship, risk, and the pursuit of absolute freedom. Over the years it has become a true cult classic.
