What will become of Matrix? The fandom wonders after Matrix: Resurrections, not exactly welcomed as an event, but this year Warner Bros. confirmed their intention to move forward with another film, with the project led by Drew Goddard as screenwriter and director. For the first time the saga would be steered by people outside the brand in its conception, but Lilly Wachowski, interviewed by The Business, does not yet know how to position herself regarding this passing of the baton. She had, after all, already distanced herself from Lana Wachowski‘s Resurrections.
Lilly Wachowski Feels the Matrix World Is Now Far Removed
The Matrix saga has always stayed within the Wachowskis’ orbit: the only jolt came when Lana Wachowski signed Matrix: Resurrections (2021), after Lana and Lilly Wachowski had directed together the seminal Matrix (1999) and the sequels Matrix Reloaded (2003) and Matrix Revolutions (2003). Already at the release of the fourth chapter, nearly twenty years later, Lilly confirmed that she had preferred to keep her distance, deeming that part of her life behind her. The idea of handing the series over to Drew Goddard would, however, have to pass through supervision / approval of the material by Lana and Lilly, who, doubtful, say: “Warner Bros wants to make another one, they will always want to make another. Personally I wouldn’t want to play in that team anymore, let’s say I’m done. But it seems there is something concrete coming from Drew Goddard, only that he doesn’t want to go forward without our blessing. So a complicated situation is created, in which perhaps we’ll have to stick our noses in just a little to understand what we think, whether we’re willing to bless Drew or not. In short, something could happen later, but it’s not yet certain.
Not much is certain in the months surrounding Warner Bros.’ acquisition by Paramount Skydance, but it seems plausible that another attempt to refresh the Matrix brand will be undertaken, commercially quite damaged by the outcome of Resurrections (flop of tremendous proportions, with not even $160 million in box office on a $190 million budget, according to Variety). It has been several years since Goddard last directed a film, but in the meantime he contributed to the screenplay of The Last Mission: Project Hail Mary, a big success in the USA (less so worldwide).
