David Oyelowo (Silo) and Viola Prettejohn (The Crown) will take on the roles of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander in Sky and NOW’s forthcoming series The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a fresh adaptation—the first for television—of the celebrated Swedish crime novel by journalist and author Stieg Larsson, Men Who Hate Women, the inaugural entry in the Millennium series.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: The Plot of the TV Series
The ambitious project, set fifteen years after the films featuring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, comes from the pen of BAFTA winner Amanda Coe (Room at the Top), alongside Steve Lightfoot (the mind behind Shantaram and The Punisher and a leading writer for Hannibal) and his frequent collaborator Angela LaManna. The story, modernized for today’s world, follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist, whose career has been compromised, and the uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander, as they probe the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who more than thirty years earlier was at the secluded residence of one of Sweden’s most powerful industrial dynasties. As they dig into the family’s buried past, their investigation leads them toward a chilling threat that is increasingly close to home in the present day.
According to Deadline, the television adaptation will encompass the entire Vanger family, delving into its dynamics more deeply than the films did. In this regard, announcements of further cast additions are expected in the coming days, ahead of filming kicking off in Lithuania next month. Meghan Lyvers, head of Sky’s original drama, stated that Salander and Blomkvist are “two of the most iconic and captivating characters in modern storytelling,” adding that “we’re thrilled to have Viola and David bring them to life for a new generation.” Executive producer Charlotte Moore added: “The story of Men Who Hate Women is an iconic one that tackles themes such as power, corruption, justice, and violence against women—issues that are more relevant today than ever. With Viola Prettejohn and David Oyelowo at the center of this adaptation, we have two extraordinary actors in these complex, multifaceted roles, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience their interpretations.”
