Miami Vice ’85: First Photos of Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan Announce Start of Filming

Finally we can take a look at the leading actors of Miami Vice ’85 in the roles of their iconic characters. Universal Pictures has released two photos: one of Austin Butler portraying Sonny Crockett and the other of Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs. Of course, there’s still quite a stretch until May 19, 2028, the day when the film reboot of the famous TV series Miami Vice, which aired from 1984 to 1989 and was brought to life by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, will hit the big screen. Yet having something to behold makes the wait sweeter, and when we say behold, it’s because both Butler and Michael B. Jordan are truly a sight to behold.

We spoke about Miami Vice ’85 just a few days ago, to bring you news of a tasty addition to the cast: the Superman actor Edi Gathegi. The film also features Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Alden Ehrenreich, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz. Regarding the reboot, we know it will be shot in IMAX and that the direction is by Joseph Kosinski. The screenplay, which specifically draws inspiration from the pilot episode of the series, was entrusted to Dan Girloy, who will tell us about the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami.

Miami Vice has already been adapted into a film, which kept the Series title and bore the signature of Michael Mann. It starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Compared to the leads of Miami Vice ’85 as we see them in today’s photographs, they look decidedly more rough-and-tumble. Of course, Austin Butler sports a gold watch that wouldn’t be out of place on a drug lord or a rapper, but the gray suit he wears is very, very chic. For Michael B. Jordan, an all-black look was chosen. In general, it seems the light and pastel colors of the original TV show have been set aside. Should we therefore forget the pink T-shirts and aqua-green ones? Probably yes, though never say never.

On the posts shared on the film’s social channels, we read the names of the actors and their roles, the film title and the words “now in production,” which means that filming has officially begun, a fact we are absolutely delighted about.
