Musical Film in Development Based on La Oreja de Van Gogh’s Discography — ‘You Can Count on Me’

After Amaia Montero’s return to the band from the tour, La Oreja de Van Gogh now takes the leap to the cinema. ‘Puedes contar conmigo’ is the title of the film that will bring to the big screen the music of the group that has shaped an entire generation. It will be through a romantic comedy directed by Fernando González Molina, the director of ‘Tres metros sobre el cielo’ or ‘Palmeras en la nieve’.

That said, nobody should expect a fictionalized version of the power struggles within the band or a recreation of the departure, and subsequent return, of its lead vocalist: following the trail of other titles such as ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Puedes contar conmigo’ will weave the band’s discography into a fictional story, with the band’s involvement in the film limited (at least for now) to executive production.

A executive production that will count on Beltrán Gortázar, Domingo Corral and Gonzalo Salazar-Simpson, in addition to the members of La Oreja. The project is in an advanced stage of development and scriptwriting, led by González Molina and Miguel López Martínez. Its starting point will be an original story inspired by the emotional universe of the songs.

Unconfirmed cast

The film currently aims to present itself with the track records of its three producers, while neither the cast nor the songs that will be featured in the film have yet to be revealed. Gortázar was the CEO of Suma Content, the production company of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, during the development of titles such as ‘La Mesías’ and ‘Superstar’. Corral led Movistar Plus+’s fiction, while Salazar-Simpson, founder of Lazona, counts in his career with films such as ‘Ocho apellidos vascos’ and ‘No habrá paz para los malvados’.

What seems clear is that the film will be a must-see for nostalgic millennials who, approaching theaters, will recall those mythical themes from their youth.

For González Molina, the assignment represents the opportunity to approach a genre he has always wanted to explore. The director has explained that he wishes to bring the great romantic musicals into the language of contemporary cinema and to make the film evoke an emotion comparable to the one fans find in the songs. Adapting that universe represents for him “a gigantic challenge”. The challenge lies in giving a new cinematic life to themes with which part of the public already maintains a very personal relationship.
