Today it lands in 515 Italian cinemas with I Wonder Pictures, a must-see documentary, Naza, directed by two of the Oscar-winning authors of No Man’s Land, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, and awarded at the Venice Film Festival with the Special Jury Prize. It is by no means an easy watch, but it is essential if we want to understand the world we live in and the conflicts that tear it apart. And this time those speaking to us are the Israeli soldiers who participated in operations against Gaza, effectively recounting the license to kill innocent civilians in large numbers, the so-called “collateral damage.” Naza is, in fact, a military acronym which, according to investigations by independent Israeli outlets +972 Magazine and Local Call, is used by the Israeli armed forces to indicate the estimated number of civilians who could be killed in a given air raid on Gaza. Naza: the Film’s Structure That Provoked Israeli Authorities
Shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv during the Gaza war, the film reconstructs the systems and procedures behind what it describes as a campaign of mass killings of Palestinian civilians. Through the same testimonies of soldiers involved in the operations, the documentary highlights the mechanisms by which attacks are planned and argues that the decisions of the Israeli government and the military apparatus played a decisive role in the large-scale killing of Palestinian civilians throughout the conflict.
