The on-screen return of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, is turning out to be far more compelling than NCIS fans had expected. On the same day that NCIS: Origins reunited the franchise’s favorite character with his former colleague and longtime friend Tony DiNozzo—who has since returned in NCIS: Counter-Crime Unit with his actor Michael Weatherly—it was announced that the prequel spin-off would also bring Emily Wickersham back in the role of Ellie Bishop. She will appear in multiple episodes of the third season starting next, airing in the United States on October 27.
NCIS: Origins, Emily Wickersham Returns as Well
Wickersham has been one of the faces of NCIS for eight seasons, always by Harmon’s Gibbs side. Her Ellie Bishop left the show in 2018, at the end of the eighteenth season, when she chose to pursue a different path, taking on a long-term undercover operation. She then reappeared in the previous season of NCIS, briefly, when she sought help from Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), the member of her old team she trusts most, to prove her innocence in the leak of confidential information.
According to previews released by CBS—of course, if you’d rather not learn more, do not continue reading!—Bishop is recruited by the new NCIS director Tony DiNozzo to help Gibbs hunt the unknown attackers who, in the first episode of NCIS: Origins’ third season, tried to kill him in his isolated cabin amid Alaska’s wilderness. A clip circulated online shows Gibbs pointing a gun at her before discovering that it is her. “I’ve missed you too,” she tells him. And when he tells her that he had told Tony this investigation must remain “off the books,” Bishop replies: “Well, that’s exactly why he called me. My entire existence is off the books.” Then, when the former boss orders her to “prepare for action,” she lets out a laugh and admits: “I never thought I’d hear you say something like that.”
