The first trailer had already started to hint at it, and now the confirmation arrives: the new NCIS spin-off set in New York will set itself apart from the other series in the successful franchise, appearing “darker and sharper.” This was revealed by director Dennis Smith during the latest episode of NCIS: Partners & Probies, the podcast hosted by the star of NCIS – Naval Criminal Investigative Service Brian Dietzen, thus offering the most eager fans a new detail about this anticipated interaction on U.S. screens for October 6.
NCIS: New York Will Be Much Darker and Sharper
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, the man behind The Pitt, one of the most awarded series in recent years, NCIS: New York brings LL Cool J back as Sam Hanna, the character he portrays in NCIS: Los Angeles and later in NCIS: Hawai’i. The legendary agent of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and former Navy SEAL returns to his hometown to work at the local office of the agency, paired with a rebellious, blunt colleague, Nick Schaeffer (the Hawaii Five-0 star Scott Caan), and leading a new team engaged in high-risk missions to defend one of the world’s most important cities and ports.
When Dietzen asked Smith how NCIS: New York differs from the other NCIS series, the latter replied: “I think it will be a much darker and sharper series, something that Scott Gemmill has always wanted to do.” Gemmill has also served as showrunner for NCIS: Los Angeles and as one of the writers and producers of JAG – Lawyers in Uniform, the milestone drama from which the NCIS franchise sprang.
Smith, himself an undeniable authority on NCIS, having directed over 60 episodes of the flagship series and numerous episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans and the recent NCIS: Tony & Ziva, said he would be interested in repeating the experience also in NCIS: New York. He revealed that he had exchanged messages with LL Cool J (also one of the executive producers of the series) and told him: “Feel free to drop my name if you think it appropriate.”
