It seems Netflix’s grand plans are to trim budgets across the board. According to unnamed sources cited by the media, the streaming giant is ready to kick off a large layoff round that would cut 5% of the company’s workforce in one go. These layoffs would start to be carried out beginning next week, so unfortunately we won’t have to wait long to see if the insiders are right.
Let’s take this information with a grain of salt, since no Netflix representative has issued any statement on the matter to date. If the data are correct, the number of affected people would rise to roughly 800 employees. The company employed 16,000 workers by the end of 2025, so the figures would add up, but we don’t know for certain whether this number has increased since then. Expect a bit of a numbers shuffle until official data are released.
The largest layoff round in its history
The striking total of 800 people affected marks the largest layoff figure the company has ever carried out. The previous round, back in 2022, left a total of 450 people out of work. At the time the reasons were attributed to a drop in subscriber numbers. This time it would affect almost twice as many employees, and the exact reasons elude us when Netflix is theoretically on the rise at the moment.
Unfortunately this seems to be the current trend among large corporations, especially in North America. In the industry we’ve seen Disney undertake similar moves with a thousand jobs cut overnight. It isn’t likely to mark the end of such news, as we can expect soon a large wave of layoffs tied to the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger, which is already affecting some of its top executives.
Prices Rise
Make no mistake: these layoffs do not correspond to a drop in Netflix’s revenues in the short or medium term. This year they raised the price of all their plans in the United States, and it wouldn’t be surprising if by 2027 these increases affect Spain, which so far has managed to avoid it, even though other European countries have already implemented similar changes.
