From November 18, the biopic Madden will be streaming on Prime Video, with Nicolas Cage who has drawn on all of his acting powers to portray a legendary (at least in the USA) football coach and commentator, John Madden. It’s indisputable that there’s a real disparity in build between Cage and the late, much-loved John, which forced the actor to adopt a particular dietary regime in order to resemble the lead. As Cage explained to People, this type of preparation must be handled with prudence.
Madden, da dove arrivano i chili di troppo di Nicolas Cage, l’attore spiega la sua dieta
In theory, to resemble the real John Madden in Madden, directed by David O. Russell, the good Nicolas Cage would have had to gain twenty-five to thirty pounds. That would have been a formidable, perhaps too risky feat for someone no longer in their youth. Through a careful approach, Cage managed to achieve the result: “Carbohydrates, I put on about ten kilos. I enjoyed my pasta and my naturally leavened bread, things I normally don’t eat. It was quite brutal. Two protein shakes and one meal a day, usually a Caesar Salad. But beyond that, the pasta. Still, for the discerning observer: I’m 62 years old, I can’t put on 30 pounds; it would be dangerous. The other roughly fifteen pounds were added with prosthetic makeup.” In short, Cage’s tactic was a combination of diet and make-up, a method already employed by Gary Oldman when playing Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. And we wish Cage further recognition for this commitment as we anticipate his appearances in other projects already in the pipeline, including Lords of War by Andrew Niccol (the sequel to Lord of War) and the spy thriller Fortitude from old friend Simon West.
