Marvel Studios’ creative choices have sparked plenty of conversation in recent years. The films and series released since Avengers: Endgame have enjoyed success, but many fans feel that something has been lost along the way during these years. And there’s someone who, while admitting admiration for the work done with their superheroes in the past, is now disappointed with its direction: none other than Nicolas Cage.
The actor has been at Fan Expo Dallas recently, where he shared his thoughts on Marvel’s work on the big screen. There he revealed that the cinematic universe began “wonderfully”, with a deft touch in weaving stories with different directors and involved actors. Yet when it comes to more recent projects, he believes the quality has fallen sharply, accompanied by dreadful costumes and merely action scenes. “It’s hard for me not to think that the MCU is turning into a glorified, high-budget WWE,” he laments.
Things Aren’t Made Like They Used to Be
Cage’s sense of disappointment with how Marvel has unfolded didn’t come out of nowhere. The actor has long been closely associated with the licenses they handle, from the original Ghost Rider films to the recently canceled ‘Spider-Noir’. And his view of how Marvel Studios runs things is tied to this latest series, because he believes things were done quite differently in the past.
“One of the things I liked about ‘Spider-Noir’ was that it wasn’t limited to fights: it was a detective story,” Cage told the crowd at the convention. “There was a mystery. I’d like the MCU to tell stories like that again and not just focus on wrestling-style bouts.”;
A Different Future
Critics have long argued that Marvel Studios has lost the magic that defined it in recent years, not so much because everything now highlighted is about action, but because the emphasis has shifted. The cancellation of ‘Spider-Noir’ is painful, but the series wasn’t connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Nicolas Cage criticizes in any way. The actor hasn’t had the chance to be a part of it, and perhaps this shared sentiment of his has something to do with that.
