Nicolas Cage Rips the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a Scathing Barb

A devoted comic-book nerd long before it was this fashionable, Nicolas Cage has always harbored a special fondness for the superhero world, so much so that he revisited it one last time with the eight episodes of Spider-Noir, though the project wasn’t renewed, it was nonetheless appreciated. Attending Fan Expo Dallas, he allowed himself an ironic reflection on aging colleagues who embrace these universes, hinting that credibility can wane after a while, with a comparison that is bound to spark debate and ignite a certain vehemence among more than a few fandoms. Let’s read carefully what he said, as reported by Playlist.

Nicolas Cage compares the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Wrestling

At 62, freshly coming off Spider-Noir, the good Nicolas Cage didn’t shy away from slipping into the world of cinecomic, albeit in a retro ironic frame: this can render at least part of his remarks about aging colleagues who embrace superhero universes somewhat contradictory. He quipped, jokingly: “I say this with affection, but when I see these ultracinquant’in) — otherwise intelligent and exceptionally talented colleagues — donning ridiculous costumes to gear up for battle — because, let’s face it, it always comes down to the battle — it’s hard for me not to think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is turning into a well‑funded and pumped WWE.” Naturally, WWE stands for “World Wrestling Entertainment“: in other words, Nic has poked fun at both the cinecomic and wrestling in one go, and we don’t know which of the two camps harbors the more combative fandom, but we fear Cage will find out very soon.
Beyond the barb, which actually lampoons not only the age but also the tonal choices and narrative directions, one wonders how many cast members are indeed over 50 currently active in Marvel’s cinecomics. As for Avengers: Doomsday hitting theatres on December 16, the following names fall into the over‑50 category: Robert Downey Jr., Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, James Marsden, David Harbour, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn, not to mention the true veterans Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. To be fair, they do not yet reach fifty: Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Channing Tatum, Sebastian Stan, nor the rest of the female cast (Letitia Wright is only 32, Vanessa Kirby not even 40). They could still climb back into the ring a few more times, at a glance.
We’ll soon see Cage again in one of his new physical transformations, in Madden, as the trailer below suggests. For the record, the image above, meanwhile, comes from the satirical Dream Scenario.
