Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Battles Ghosts, Disappearances, and an Apocalyptic Conspiracy in a New Horror Series

Since his Jaime Lannister was crushed by the rubble of the Red Keep in the final season of Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has returned to TV twice: in the historical drama King & Conqueror, in the role of William the Conqueror, and in the thriller The Last Thing He Told Me, in the part of the protagonist’s missing husband. Now the Danish actor is back on screen with a horror story, starring in the newly ordered MGM+ series The Black Tapes, from Leverage co-creator John Rogers.

The Black Tapes: the plot of the new TV series with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Written by Terry Miles and Paul Bae, the creators of the 2015 podcast of the same name from which the supernatural horror drama is adapted, The Black Tapes follows Dr. Richard Strand (Coster-Waldau), a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past who teams up with Alex Regan (Sosie Bacon, Scarpetta), a relentless and obsessive scientist, to debunk paranormal cases spanning infestations, possessions, and eerie disappearances. However, as Strand and Regan uncover the secrets behind these phenomena, they discover a hidden occult world right beside our own, forcing them to shed light on an apocalyptic conspiracy centuries in the making.

MGM+ has ordered eight episodes, with production set to begin in Vancouver, Canada, next January. “The Black Tapes builds a compelling story around our cultural fascination with what cannot be explained, while delivering the classic, cinematic storytelling that MGM+ audiences expect,” said Michael Wright, the Global Head. “Thanks to Nikolaj’s charismatic presence and the creative vision of John Rogers, Kearie Peak and our talented production team, we are excited to bring to life a work that is, at once, provocative and highly entertaining.”

Rogers added: “I was an early fan and a big enthusiast of the The Black Tapes podcast. It is a unique mix of genuinely unsettling horror and conspiracy-mysteries that unfold like a puzzle. With Paul and Terry involved not only as executive producers but also in the writing team, we have the opportunity to raise The Black Tapes to a new generation of genre fans, as well as to deepen and expand the series’ mythology in ways that will surprise even long-time fans of supernatural horror.”
