Following its preview at the upcoming Venice Film Festival (scheduled from September 2 to 12), it will arrive in our cinemas on September 24, distributed by 01Distribution, No Pain, Gianni Amelio’s new film, starring Alessandro Borghi, Valeria Golino and Valerio Mastandrea, with Beïdja Yahiaoui, Ramzi Lafrindi and Gabriel Bovino in supporting roles. The film is written by Amelio himself together with Davide Serino and Andrea Quetti and is produced by Simone Gattoni, Marco Bellocchio, Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani and Mattia Guerra. Davide is a thirty-something with a passion for books: he doesn’t read many, but he sells them in a square in Rome. His most loyal client, Elsa, is also his accomplice; she provides him with second-hand volumes and fills him with affection and tenderness.
Something, however, cracks on a day like any other: Davide is suddenly handed over, on the street, as if a package, a child who comes from North Africa, and who won’t leave him, follows him in silence like a loyal puppy.
An accident, the rush to the hospital with the little stranger between life and death. And Davide enters a personal hell made of reticence, remorse, confusion. In the forbidden refuge of the emergency room, one night Davide meets Aminah, just arrived from Algeria on a migrant boat. She is a drenched teenager, trembling, afraid, and visibly expecting a child. Davide cannot help but give her shelter in his home.
But this is only the beginning. Every evening, returning from work, Davide finds in his apartment as a solitary man more and more strangers. He resists in vain, but in the end he is forced to surrender, whether out of generosity or weakness. His home is no longer just his but also theirs—those who have no roof to shelter them, the many who sleep under a bridge or in a corner of the street.
While the residents’ complaint sends him to jail for aiding illegal immigration, Davide endures a full odyssey that is not only personal, but somehow, in one way or another, upends the feelings of others.
