Three decades after Lamerica, Gianni Amelio returns to address immigration in a film that is markedly different, Nessun dolore, which today premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival. As he himself says, “What has changed since then, who is the immigrant? Someone to welcome, or to reject? A new friend, or a dangerous stranger?”
It tries to answer by telling the story of Davide, a thirty-something with a passion for books who sells them from a kiosk in the heart of Rome. His most loyal customer, Elsa, is also his partner in crime, providing him with second-hand volumes. Davide is suddenly handed, on the street, like a package, a child from North Africa, and he does not let go of him, following him in silence like a faithful little dog.
Set for release on September 24 by 01 Distribution, Nessun dolore was written by Amelio himself, together with Davide Serino and Andrea Quetti. We spoke with the leads, Alessandro Borghi and Valeria Golino, in Venice.
