There is no doubt that Obsession, the psychological horror that has introduced to the world the talent of the 26-year-old screenwriter and director Curry Barker and Indie Navarrette (both rising from zero to a hundred in the cinematic equivalent of a heartbeat) is one of the best genre films of recent years. It has everything that horror enthusiasts could want: a compelling theme, the grip of emotional dependence that many can identify with, supernatural elements, gore, irony, and the ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats thanks to the strength of the performances. Produced entirely independently, distributed by Focus Features and made for only $750,000, it has grossed over $238 million domestically and has now set another record thanks to its overseas success, bringing the worldwide total to $501 million. And, as Barker shared in the Instagram story shown below, it became the first original film in the last six years to surpass the half‑billion mark. Pazzesco! is the director’s reaction, who is currently working on his new project, Anything but Ghosts, for which Focus has joined forces this time with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse.

To give you an idea, Obsession has earned far more than films with substantially higher budgets and major productions backing them. Among these are Pixar’s Elemental, Ryan Coogler’s I peccatori, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, Free Guy, Encanto, and Wish. Compared to its direct “competitor,” Backrooms, which had cost $10 million, Obsession has outperformed it worldwide by a staggering $140 million. As one of the people who greatly appreciated the film, we only hope that this enormous, unexpected success doesn’t go to Curry Barker’s head, and that he can continue to bring us more original, uncompromising movies worthy of his talent.
