The live-action remake of Oceania has arrived in theaters, and if you are part of the Disney fandom you have probably wondered what additions to the original soundtrack were made: aside from the necessary extension of the instrumental part, only one new song was written, which however does not alter the narrative balance. It has a more symbolic value and was placed at the end credits, entrusted to a significant trio in the original version, which we invite you to listen to below.
“What Is the Way” or “Along the Way” is the new song on the Oceania soundtrack
“Along the Way” has been entrusted to the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga’aia, and Auli’i Cravalho: the latter had voiced Vaiana in the original versions of the two animated films, while Laga’aia brings Vaiana to life in real life, with Johnson guaranteeing for both, since he played the demigod Maui in the cartoons as well as on the real set. The director of this remake, Thomas Kail, explained the choice to us and to Lin-Manuel Miranda, author of the track: “One of the things that is missing from Oceania is a duet between our two characters, which makes it different from a lot of other musicals. We told ourselves: two Vaianas singing with Maui are even better than one Vaiana singing with Maui! This allowed us to involve Auli’i with her voice. The song itself speaks of ancestors, of innovators, of who came before, Auli’i is this for Catherine. We loved this opportunity to create a musical moment to let her say: I’ve come this far, now you come and I am by your side. And naturally Dwayne as Maui is the bridge between them, between the two Vaianas.”
“What Is the Way” is the Italian version of “Along the Way” and is sung by Fabrizio Vidale, the official Italian voice of Maui, together with Chiara Grispo and Elisa Rinaldi, the Italian voices of the heroine Vaiana for the singing scenes, respectively in the cartoons and in the remake.
