Oceania Still Tops the Italian Box Office This Weekend

Oceania, live-action remake of the Disney classic, is quietly leading the new cinematic season, confirming itself as the top film at the Italian weekend box office, with 1,864,200 euros, for a total of 8,560,000. It’s doing quite well here in Italy for the movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia, reassuring Disney despite the globally cool response to this remake, for a worldwide gross of 308,510,000 dollars (Box Office Mojo source). That’s not much to justify a rumored budget of 250 million, according to Variety. It seems that in our country the appetite for Disney remakes discriminates less than in other nations, provided this remains a beloved brand.

Stable in second place is Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, the most-watched film in Italy for the calendar year, now at 54,432,000 euros, of which 1,338,750 were collected in the last weekend. Homer’s epic poem, brought to the screen by Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland as Telemachus and An­ne Hathaway as Penelope, has proven to be a worldwide success with 1,552,600,000 dollars: a confirmation for Nolan of his bet, costing more than any of his other films (250 million according to Hollywood Reporter). Universal will be glad to have backed it.

It does not move from the third position either Spider-Man: Brand New Day, still starring Tom Holland but this time in the role of Peter Parker: it’s true that in Italy the superhero film by Destin Daniel Cretton, with a total of 36,750,000 euros (940,000 in the weekend), is well behind Odyssey, but in the rest of the world the story is different. The film is on the verge of surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water, because its global triumph stands at an impressive 2,332,508,000 dollars. In the face of such a figure, citing a budget around 225 million (per Deadline) almost seems to smile.

Fourth place for a pseudo-debut: the re-release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone makes its mark with 775,000 euros, which become 1,070,000 when considering the five days in theaters. Great confirmation for Warner Bros., ready to launch the TV series that adapts the novels, starting December 25 on HBO Max.

Fifth place for the muted debut of The Dog Stars – The Stars After the End by , a post-apocalyptic story with Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce. Based on Peter Heller’s novel The Dog Stars, it collected about 670,000 euros in five days. The worldwide opening stands at 19,300,000 dollars, enough to push analysts to declare it a flop: Deadline and The Numbers place the total budget between 70 and 110 million dollars. It is not known whether promotion is included, because on the MiC Database, which provided a tax credit due to filming in our country, the total declared budget is 52,134,000 euros, roughly equivalent to 60 million dollars.
