In the United States, Odissea by Christopher Nolan has been pulled from 230 theaters. Said this way, or rather written this way, because the source of our news uses precisely the word “rimosso,” it sounds like some kind of punishment for the box-office champion, for which there is no ground for reproach, and not only because it drew a huge audience to the cinemas. Odissea, in fact, is a gripping and well-made epic, only that it is right that it makes room for other films, which perhaps are not on its level but nevertheless need to have their turn.
When it opened in the States, Odissea was shown in 3,919 theaters. Recently it had fallen to 560 theaters, which over a weekend became 330. This sudden drop is due to the arrival of the survival thriller Whalefall: In the Whale, of Street Fighter (the adaptation of the eponymous video game saga) and especially the documentary by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder, You Can See Everything, which in just two days grossed $15 million with a very high per-theater average, a result higher than that of any documentary released since 2013. Also Street Fighter had a strong debut, but the documentary about American entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, as we told you yesterday, really surpassed all expectations, earning, among other things, a 98% positive rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site.
Odissea, which is the Christopher Nolan film that has earned the most (the runner-up being The Dark Knight Rises), has also topped Deadpool & Wolverine, establishing itself as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Currently the worldwide gross for Odissea stands at $1.789 billion, a figure destined to rise until the day it leaves theaters, which, in any case, will not be tomorrow.
