Official: Fast & Furious Returns to TV with a Series That Will Answer a Specific Fan Question

Fast & Furious steps on the gas and is ready to race on the small screen as well. According to Deadline, the streaming service Peacock has officially greenlit the first TV series set in the world of the famous film franchise that began 25 years ago, thereby confirming the project Vin Diesel announced during NBCUniversal’s Upfronts last May. Diesel himself had explained at that time that the television expansion was also driven by a demand coming directly from the audience. According to the actor, fans had been asking for about a decade for the saga to make its way to television. Now that wish is becoming a reality.

Fast & Furious: The TV Series Is Official

The first television series of Fast & Furious has been officially ordered by Peacock. The project will be produced by Universal Television and will involve Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman at the helm as writers and co-showrunners. Daniels will also serve as an executive producer alongside Coleman, Vin Diesel, and the other producers already attached to the project: Sam Vincent for One Race, Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, as well as Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan. The series is currently slated for 2028, although Peacock has not yet announced a precise premiere date. For now, story details remain top secret. It has not been revealed which characters will be central to the series, nor has it been clarified which period of the saga will be depicted.

Vin Diesel: “I Fans Wanted More”

The arrival of Fast & Furious on television was announced by Vin Diesel himself during NBCUniversal’s Upfronts last May. At that moment, the star portraying Dominic Toretto explained that the idea of expanding the franchise wasn’t new and that the audience had played a significant role in pushing it forward. “In the last ten years we’ve understood that the fans wanted more. They wanted us to broaden the core characters and their stories,” Diesel said. The actor added that, for roughly a decade now, fans have wished to see Fast & Furious enter the television realm as well. So this, more than anything, is the “extra” Diesel was referring to: fresh stories set within the saga’s universe and the opportunity to delve deeper into its iconic characters.

Will the Series Be Connected to Fast Forever?

Another unanswered question concerns the relationship between the new series and Fast Forever, the eleventh and final film in the main saga. The film is scheduled for 2028, the same year in which the Peacock series is expected to debut. At present, however, no direct link between the two productions has been confirmed. We do not know whether Fast Forever will introduce characters or narrative elements that will later be developed for television. Likewise, it has not been disclosed whether the series will be set before or after the events of the latest cinematic installment. What is certain is that Universal Television is working to further expand a narrative universe that, after 25 years, still shows no signs of stopping.

Will There Be Other Fast & Furious Series?

Indeed, the Peacock-ordered series is not the only Fast & Furious project announced by Vin Diesel. During the Upfronts, the actor spoke of as many as four live-action TV projects in development for the platform. The other three, however, are in different stages of production. One involves Nick Wooton, the writer of The Endgame, and Charmaine DeGraté, the writer of House of the Dragon. The other two projects are linked to Ingrid Escajeda, showrunner of Griselda, and Joe Henderson, showrunner of Lucifer. For the moment, however, only the series developed by Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman has received the official Peacock order.
