One Tree Hill Behind the Scenes: The Backstory to a Notable On-Set Injury

It happens often that, years down the line, the stars of beloved TV series share intriguing details: some become real scoops, while others simply serve as anecdotes to share with ease. And this is exactly what recently happened to Paul Johansson, who spent years portraying Dan Scott in One Tree Hill. The teen drama created by Mark Schwahn and lasting nine seasons, from 2003 to 2012, made many stars famous, including Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush. Johansson, years later, recounted an unpleasant episode that involved a long shard of glass and his buttocks.

One Tree Hill, Paul Johansson recounts an embarrassing and painful on-set incident that involved a shard of glass and his buttocks

While he keeps many memories from his time on the set, Paul Johansson still vividly recalls one of the most embarrassing moments behind the scenes of One Tree Hill. As a guest on the podcast (Not) Over the Hill, dedicated to the much-loved series, the actor spoke of a painful incident that occurred off-camera: “I don’t remember which season it was, but I was in Dan Scott’s mayoral office or something like that; I had a glass desk and I had put on a few pounds. Let’s just say I was drowning my sorrows in alcohol, and, you know, I drank in the evenings and I was a bit bloated. This before getting back in shape, I was a bit puffy.”

During an informal rehearsal, the actor became the victim of an accident: “They called us all to set early in the morning, so we did it; I was filming a scene, I think with Bethany Joy Lenz, we were filming together and I still had to finish my breakfast. I had something like a burrito and an orange juice, I was filming my scene and I was a fat Dan Scott.”

In that moment, the unthinkable happened: “While I was filming my scene, I leaned on the glass desk and it exploded. A shard of glass lodged itself in my butt, about seven to ten centimeters, sideways. I was so embarrassed that I kept insisting I was fine.” Everyone was worried for him for a clear reason: “There was a trail of blood all the way to my dressing room. I hid there, pulled out that piece of glass, and almost fainted. My plump butt bounced with pain. I placed a large piece of toilet paper over the wound and pressed to stop the bleeding, but in the end they had to take me to the hospital for stitches, because the cut was there.” He says it happened “because I had eaten too much.”
