Opposites Attract on TV: 3 Must-Watch Series to Catch Up

It is often said that “like attracts like,” but the idea also works well when “opposites attract,” and it is one of the most powerful and captivating narrative engines behind several love stories in TV series. What happens when two worlds that seem so different collide? It typically gives rise to a magnetic tension through which a relationship is built in search of balance. It often happens that one character values rule-following and must question everything when on the other side they clash with the chaos generated by instinct. Or when optimism is forced to reckon with cynicism. All these dynamics allow two such different characters to soften their flaws and to question every certainty in order to grow and become better, more complete people. The attraction between opposite poles thus does not become a mere romantic cliché, but a journey of mutual transformation for the characters involved. Here are three TV series that fully explore this theme.

Romantic TV Series About Opposites Attracting: 3 Titles to Watch

Sex Education

Spread over four seasons, Sex Education represents a well-loved teen comedy offering from Netflix. The story is set in the Moordale high school context and begins with a rather quirky premise: Otis, the protagonist, decides to open a sex-therapy clinic for his classmates; the problem is that Otis is incredibly inexperienced on the subject, unlike his mother who is a successful sex therapist. Supporting the idea is Maeve, a girl from a troubled family who is forced to grow up too quickly to cope with life’s difficulties. Two characters very different from one another but complementary: Otis is shy, awkward, yet highly empathetic, while Maeve is a proudly independent, cynical girl who nonetheless desires affection. Otis manages to see what lies beyond Maeve’s wall of hostility, while the latter pushes Otis to overcome his fears.

Dash & Lily

Streaming on Netflix and lasting only one season, Dash & Lily is a Christmas comedy adapted from the first novel of a trilogy by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan titled Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, and it is set in New York during the Christmas holidays. The protagonists set up a real treasure hunt among the shelves of a bookstore where Lily has hidden her red notebook. Eccentric, sunny, and fond of Christmas traditions, Lily decides to shake up her holidays with a provocation, and Dash, a more solitary boy who is allergic to festivities, finds it. Through those pages they throw down challenges and riddles, eventually falling in love even before meeting in person. In this case too, the two characters prove to be very different from one another: Dash is a solitary and cynical boy who prefers to retreat among the books to avoid the risk of disappointment, while Lily is a cheerful and sunny person who nevertheless fears not being accepted by her peers. Through that notebook, both manage to find a balance by encouraging each other.

New Girl

Available on Disney+, New Girl immediately introduces a disruptive element when Jessica Day becomes the unlikely roommate of three guys in a loft in Los Angeles. Among the most beloved rom-coms on TV in recent years, New Girl focuses primarily on the relationship between Nick and Jess, who could hardly be more different from one another. Jess is a bundle of optimism, a positive person who believes in the goodness of others and tackles problems with an almost childlike and contagious enthusiasm, while Nick is a lazy, gruff man who uses sarcasm as a defense and procrastinates over problems. Jess’s arrival sparks a reaction in Nick, pushing him to believe more in his own abilities, to take on responsibilities he would have typically avoided, just as Nick’s loyal presence offers Jess a concrete anchor to reality because he loves her without wanting to change anything about her.
