The Last Day of Filming can be particularly emotionally demanding for the stars who have accompanied a given entertainment project from start to finish, and it was by no means easy for the Outer Banks cast either. Returning to Netflix with a fifth and final season, Drew Starkey, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss and Carlacia Grant opened up about how they managed the emotions on the last day of shooting and who shed a few more tears than the others.
Outer Banks Season 5 and the Last Day of Filming: Who Cried the Most Among the Cast?
The Pogues’ adventure began in 2020 on Netflix. Outer Banks introduced an adventure-driven tale following a group of young leads on the hunt for a treasure. The Pogues, living in the island’s poorer district and led by John B, decide to pursue the clues to recover the treasure of the Royal Merchant, which had previously drawn the errant attention of John B.’s missing father. Their journey spanned five seasons and has now come to an end, but filming the final day on set proved especially tough for those involved, as the cast recently explained.
Speaking to People, the stars admitted that it wasn’t easy to handle the palpable emotional weight on set that day. Jonathan Daviss, who portrays Pope Heyward, recalled: “Suddenly we’re filming the last scene and then we hear: ‘It’s over.’ I glance around and begin to grasp that this is the last time we’ll ever do this series, ever. It’s a whirlwind of emotions. Everyone was there. The scene required all of us. So we had been on set all week, we were all together and we stayed until the end. We were all [trying] to reach the end of the day. It was long, it was cold, it was hard. For most of the time, it felt like any other day,” the actor said, noting that on set there were also Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Carlacia Grant and Drew Starkey, and all of them burst into tears when filming wrapped. “Who cried the most? I’d say Chase or Madison, probably. They cried more than anyone. They’re real crybabies,” Daviss admitted.
The actor then confessed what emotion struck him most intensely in that moment: “It’s a strange feeling… I wouldn’t call it relief because that’s not the right word, but something closer to awe. This experience has been so steady in my life; the best comparison I can offer is the moment you graduate and realize you’ll never see these people in the same way again. It’s all contained in a single moment.” Drew Starkey, who plays Rafe Cameron, confessed: “I cried a lot. An embarrassingly large amount of tears rolled down my face. It was a sad day, but there was so much affection among everyone. It was incredible. Our showrunners and the production arranged it so that the last day we were all together on set, with the entire crew present. In the end, I think it was seeing all those faces I had met almost every day for most of the last seven years, combined with the awareness that everything was ending, that completely overwhelmed me with emotion.” The fifth and final season of Outer Banks is available for streaming on Netflix from August 20, 2026.
