Outer Banks Season Finale Explained: What Happens to the Pogues?

And Outer Banks has also come to an end. Released in full on Netflix on August 20, 2026, the fifth season picks up the story from where it left off in the fourth chapter, and brings the Pogues to definitively close the loop right where it all began: on Kildare Island. But what happened?

Outer Banks, what happens in the finale of the fifth season

The fifth season resumes the story from where it had paused in the fourth chapter, with the tragic death of JJ (Rudy Pankow), showing the protagonists John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) at their most difficult and dramatic moment, ready to track down Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) to kill him and seek vengeance for their friend, and it closes with the final episode with their showdown, concluding the series in a way that mirrors how it began: with a violent hurricane that devastates Kildare Island and frames the protagonists’ mission.

Chandler Groff, after killing JJ, escapes aboard a boat with the Royal Merchant’s gold (belonging to Rose) that he had previously stolen. The man intends to convert it into cash, seize the Blue Crown – tearing it from the French – and amass immense power. But his plans go up in smoke: Kiara, despite the hurricane forcing the entire island to evacuate, follows him secretly and boards his boat. Once exposed, a brutal physical confrontation ensues in which the girl manages to prevail, causing Groff to drown in the storm. Kiara, in turn, risks sinking with the vessel but is saved in time by John B, Sarah, and Pope. After the storm, the group finds themselves with the Royal Merchant’s gold in their hands.

One year later, the series presents the protagonists’ happy ending. John B uses his share of gold to reclaim the land where he lived and rebuild his father’s house. He marries Sarah, with whom he also has a son. Pope and Cleo, thanks to the gold they obtained, manage to regularize Cleo’s status; thus they become engaged and marry. Kiara finally finds peace after JJ’s death and, with her portion of gold, decides to buy back the family home and enroll in university to pursue her dream of becoming a marine biologist. Rafe, finally, helps Sofia escape from prison but decides to stay behind to save Sheriff Shoupe, who remains trapped under a tree (during the hurricane). There, Rafe confesses all his crimes to Shoupe, including the murder of the former sheriff, but Shoupe offers him a deal: not to send him to prison in exchange for never returning to the Outer Banks. Rafe accepts and departs with Sofia for South America.
