Percy Jackson and the Olympians 3: Walker Scobell Hints at Nico di Angelo’s Pivotal Role

The third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will feature new characters, among them Nico di Angelo; he will be portrayed on Disney+’s streaming platform by Levi Chrisopulos, an actor who immediately impressed Walker Scobell, as he revealed in a recent interview. But what should we expect from Percy and Nico in the forthcoming episodes?

According to Walker Scobell, it was almost too easy to know Levi Chrisopulos was the right pick. From the very first read-through of the script together, Scobell felt he had found the perfect Nico di Angelo. “I felt a strong connection with Levi right away, and that was enough. I knew it would be him,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Levi Chrisopulos, 14 years old, recalls that this was his final audition for Percy Jackson and the Olympians; afterward he received a video message from the author of the novels, Rick Riordan, informing him that he had landed the role: “Walker was really kind. Everyone was incredibly kind, but of course I was very nervous. They arranged a meeting with my parents, then I had the last audition, they gave me the news, and I got the part.”

Regarding their characters, Scobell hinted that Nico and Percy will be much closer than depicted on the page: “They are a bit closer than they are in the novels. Nico resembles more of a reflection of Percy himself and how happiness can exist in this magical world. I think it’s easy to lose optimism when negative feelings begin to take over, and I get the sense that Nico is so positive, so joyful, and that everything seems so interesting and wonderful to him, and I think Percy really enjoys seeing him like that.”

The third season draws its strength from the plot of the third novel in the series, The Titan’s Curse, and will feature Percy, Annabeth, and Grover trying to rescue Nico and his sister Bianca before they fall prey to a dangerous foe. The mission will come with a heavy price: Annabeth will end up being captured along the way. Reflecting on the sibling dynamic, Levi Chrisopulos teased: “Bianca’s tight bond with him is the driving force behind every action this season. I think the determination to protect Bianca—and this applies to both of them, with Bianca also protecting Nico—defines their dynamic and how they relate to each other. Nico’s goal is to protect Bianca and keep her safe.”

Regarding Nico, Walker Scobell hinted that this character “will have a more prominent role throughout the season. Because it won’t be told from Percy’s point of view. There will be a few moments where we see what happens at camp, how Nico handles things, and how the other campers fare. So you’ll see Nico a bit more as the season progresses.” This will unfold as Percy, Grover, Thalia, and Zoe attempt to locate Annabeth and Artemis together with Bianca. Nico, after all, is a character who occupies a lot of space in the novels, and Scobell was aware of this during auditions: “It was strange to see everything unfold, especially when I think of Heroes of Olympus and stuff. We could keep doing this together for years.” Levi Chrisopulos’s debut in Percy Jackson and the Olympians is anticipated for November on Disney+.
