Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Walker Scobell’s Biggest On-Set Challenge Isn’t What You Think

Walker Scobell owes his rising popularity to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but at the same time he has confessed what has been the biggest challenge of portraying the demigod protagonist of the popular TV fantasy series streaming on Disney+. With a third season coming soon to the platform, Percy Jackson and the Olympians draws its strength from the literary saga by Rick Riordan, and from the very first episode, it has benefited from the support of a young star. In a recent interview, Walker Scobell described what has been the greatest challenge of being Percy Jackson so far.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Walker Scobell explains what has been the greatest difficulty encountered so far on set

Portraying a highly popular character at the start of his career has its positives and negatives: Walker Scobell knows this well, as he revealed at New York Comic Con what is the hardest thing he has to do every time he is on set. All due to his co-stars Kate McKinnon, Jason Mantzoukas and Kristen Schaal. According to the actor, it is difficult to stay serious while filming scenes together: “I won’t lie, we always have these comedians for these really funny characters and they do their job so well, so for me it’s really hard to be serious,” the star revealed.

He added: “The hardest part in portraying Percy is working with all these extraordinary actors and then having to appear constantly confused and angry, you know what I mean? I have to pretend I don’t put up with them all the time, which is really difficult. Especially because they’re all so charming.” Jason Mantzoukas actually plays Dionysus, with whom Percy has a fraught relationship, while Kristen Schaal portrays Tempest, one of the Gray sisters. Kate McKinnon, however, is a newcomer to the third season, chosen to portray Aphrodite, and regarding the latter she revealed: “There wasn’t a single take where she did the same thing. And there wasn’t a single take where she wasn’t funny.” Recalling that experience, she shared the trick she adopted: “When the camera was pointed at her, I covered my face a little, I didn’t look at her, I just tried to listen. I feel a bit guilty about it, I made that day much longer than it needed to be.”

Also Dafne Keen joins the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians portraying Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, as well as we will also see Ming-Na Wen as Hera, Jennifer Beals as Demeter and Hubert Smielecki as Apollo. Among the new demigods, we find Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie, chosen to portray the brothers Nico and Bianca di Angelo, while Saara Chaudry will be Zoë Nightshade.
