Disney has a plan for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and little by little we are starting to see its shape take form. After rumors at the beginning of the year that we might see Jack Sparrow’s son as a potential lead, some outlets grew tired of stirring the pot and used the D23 expo to question the saga’s future. And there is a clear answer: Johnny Depp is going to return to the big screen.
According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Disney is already in talks with the actor for his return in the sixth installment. “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a script, and we hope to bring it to fruition soon,” he stated on camera with unwavering conviction. Nothing more to add—the captain is back.
Franchise at Stake
After the box-office success of Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, which swept cinemas with a gross of nearly eight hundred million dollars, the pirate saga has spent some time quiet. Depp’s high-profile trial and other difficulties have prevented a sixth film from taking root, despite plans and ideas in the air. Now that the actor’s popularity appears to be recovering, it seems Disney’s moment to give the sea adventures a small nudge again.
