The animated Pokémon film saga will continue with Pokémon: Wild Card – The Movie, whose initial teaser trailer was officially unveiled on the sidelines of the just-concluded Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco. Viewers can catch a glimpse of the human protagonist at the center of the story and, if you’re a fan of the franchise, discover which Pokémon will lead the hero through this adventure. Here is what has been released:
Pokémon: Wild Card – The Movie, what is known about the anime adaptation from the Game Freak brand
No, what you see in the Pokémon: Wild Card – The Movie trailer is not Pikachu, but its “ugly twin” Mimikyu. More precisely, it is a Pokémon that uses a worn-out Pikachu disguise to win affection, concealing its true appearance, which seems to harbor malevolent powers. Its co‑lead in the film will be a player of the real Pokémon Trading Card Game, in Italian Gioco di Carte Collezionabili Pokémon, the arena where the craze began three decades ago. The new feature film is directed by animator Katsuhiko Kitada, who has been active for twenty years on series such as Attack on Titan and The First Slam Dunk. The animation will be handled by the studio CloverWorks, which already has experience adapting games to anime, as seen with Persona 5: The Animation and the second season of Ace Attorney 2.
It had been since 2020 that a full-length anime feature focused on Pokémon hadn’t graced the screens, following Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. The cinematic outings of the little battling beings—creatures that players used to “catch ’em all” and train—began in 1998 with Pokémon: The Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back, itself a spin-off of the television series that had started the year before. The Game Boy games debuted in 1996, although they did not arrive in Italy until 1999. Game Freak is the studio that created and developed the franchise, while Nintendo has traditionally handled publishing of their works on Nintendo’s platforms (with a few external exceptions, such as the mobile sensation Pokémon Go).
