Prime Video Bets on the Karen Read Case: Elizabeth Banks Stars in a Controversial Series

Prime Video is leaning into true crime with a new series centered on the Karen Read case, starring Elizabeth Banks. The platform has officially ordered eight episodes, entrusting the writing and the showrunner duties to Justin Noble, the author behind The Sex Lives of College Girls and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Elizabeth Banks in Prime Video’s Series About Karen Read

The series, still untitled, will be inspired by the Karen podcast, produced by Law&Crime and Audible Original, and will involve Warner Bros. Television, Brownstone Productions, and David E. Kelley Productions, known for titles such as Big Little Lies. Elizabeth Banks, an actress recently seen in The Miniature Wife, will star and serve as executive producer. Banks, who grew up in Massachusetts, has explained that she has followed closely the case’s impact on the community, emphasizing that the issues raised go far beyond the courtroom: from trust in institutions to how we decide which version of the facts to believe.

Karen Read, a Judicial Case that Has Divided America

The story begins with the discovery of a Boston police officer’s body in the snow during a blizzard. At the center of the allegations is his girlfriend, Karen Read, who, along with her legal team, maintains her innocence and accuses the existence of a supposed conspiracy to shield the real perpetrators. It is a case that has stirred controversy, suspicion, and deep divisions within the community. The project, however, is being developed without the direct consent of the person involved. As early as 2025, when Prime Video announced the development of the series, Read stated that she was not involved and had not authorized it. Her lawyer, Alan Jackson, also stressed that the story belongs to his client, who is considering other ways to tell her version of the facts.

The Statements

“This case has more twists and turns than any other story I have ever read, real or fictional,” said the screenwriter Justin Noble. “It makes M. Night Shyamalan look like an amateur. But the reason this story has such a strong impact and needs to be told is for the profound lessons it leaves us: about a deeply imperfect judiciary system that urgently needs to change, about the mistreatment women endure at the hands of those who instrumentalize and abuse their power, and about a victim who deserves to be remembered,” he concluded.

The explicit goal of Prime Video is to craft a narrative that explores not only the judicial case, but also the collective obsession with true crime and the consequences that emerge when the truth becomes a matter of perspective. At present, neither the final title of the miniseries nor a release date has been announced, but more details are expected soon.
