Austin Water & Power had kicked off the project, but in the end it was Netflix that shelved Ransom Canyon. The streaming service decided not to move forward with a third season of the western-flavored romantic drama set in the Texas Hill Country, effectively cancelling it. The reasons are likely tied to the viewership numbers of the latest second batch of episodes, which apparently fell short of expectations.
Ransom Canyon Will Not Have a Third Season
Based on Jodi Thomas’s Texas-set novel series, Ransom Canyon followed Josh Duhamel in the role of the introspective cowboy Staten Kirkland, caught between the struggle to seize control of the family ranch and the battle against his own inner demons, and Minka Kelly portraying Quinn O’Grady, a pianist who cannot resist the allure of her hometown, nor of Staten, the man she has always loved. The series also explored the lives of Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene), a rebellious and ambitious girl trying to chart her own path away from her father’s shadow; Lucas Russell (Garrett Wareing), a good-hearted, clever, and hardworking young man who shares a trailer-park home with his elder brother; Ellie Catawnee (Marianly Tejada), the bartender and Quinn’s friend, an independent and determined woman; and Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher), a solitary and enigmatic cowboy seeking to leave his past behind and build a new life.
After a respectable yet not spectacular reception to the first season, Ransom Canyon managed to secure a renewal under certain conditions: fewer episodes and a creative overhaul that entailed several cast moves. However, these changes did not yield the expected effects: the second season opened with 4.1 million views in its first week, down 43% compared to its debut in 2025. The situation improved slightly in the following seven days (5.5 million), before plunging in the third week (2.7 million), the final Top 10 week for the series, one week fewer than the first season. To put it in perspective, one of Netflix’s recent hits, Wherever You Are, remained in the Top 10 for ten weeks, accumulating 74.1 million views in its first three weeks. Ransom Canyon, by contrast, tallied 12.3 million views.
