At the next elections, Donald Trump will not bear the face of Jack Reacher, nor that of his actor Alan Ritchson. The star of Reacher, the Prime Video hit series based on Lee Child’s novels, revealed on Threads a surprising backstory involving the current President of the United States and a season of the series that was never produced because of him.
Reacher and the Unmade Season: What did Alan Ritchson say?
The moment arose when a fan expressed his disappointment over the unadapted Die Trying, the second novel in Child’s popular Jack Reacher series, which in Italy was published under the title Destinazione inferno (in which the protagonist “makes his deadly way through the camp of a white supremacist militia”). After calling it “my favorite book,” Ritchson wrote: “One curiosity: I had obtained approval [for adapting the novel], until a certain person was reelected.”
Although the actor did not name Trump, the reference is obvious. It’s a jab that follows the White House’s response to some of his prior statements, in which he argued that the President should “end up in prison” for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Destinazione inferno tells what happens when Jack Reacher and a politician’s daughter are kidnapped by a radical militia intent on using her as a bargaining chip to push for secession from the United States. Ritchson hinted that the production was about to adapt this story, only to withdraw for precise, undisclosed reasons.
After the first season based on the first novel, Danger Zone (Killing Floor), Reacher brought to TV the stories of the eleventh novel, Cold Revenge (Bad Luck and Trouble); of the seventh, The Designated Victim (Persuader); and of the twelfth, Nothing to Lose (Nothing to Lose), in the just-concluded fourth season. The series has already been renewed for a fifth batch of episodes, this time based on the twentieth novel, Make Me (Make Me). In this case the story begins when Reacher happens to step off a train in the small town of Mother’s Rest, in Oklahoma. There he discovers that a private investigator, Michelle Chang, is searching for a missing colleague, and he ends up getting drawn into the investigation. The protagonist will uncover a criminal network that exploits the Internet, vulnerable people, and technology for an operation much larger and more disturbing than it initially appears.
