Reacher in Theaters? Why Alan Ritchson Is a Mistake

Alan Ritchson is satisfied with the narrative success of Reacher and has explained why, in his modest view, this story works perfectly as a TV series and not as a cinematic saga. It all began in 2022 on Prime Video, with a first season that cast Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, a character created by Lee Child and already explored first on paper and then on the big screen, returning with a television reboot. But why, according to Alan Ritchson, wouldn’t a film adaptation deliver the same?

Alan Ritchson Would Not Want to Make Reacher Films: The Reason

With a fourth season recently released on streaming on Prime Video, Reacher has once again captured the public’s attention on the small screen, presenting new misadventures for the brave former major of the American army. But why does Alan Ritchson believe that a television adaptation is by far the best solution for Reacher? In an interview with Men’s Journal in 2025, the actor had already voiced his opinion on the matter: “I can’t speak for the film. I really appreciate the format we have and it works wonderfully because we adapt a book into a season. I think eight episodes is the perfect length to adapt a book.”

At that point he ramped up: “I think it probably wouldn’t do justice to the books. I don’t know if I would fight for films. I like being able to weave what seems like the equivalent of two, three or four films dedicated to Reacher over the course of a year. I’m happy with how things stand.” In fact Jack Reacher has already received cinematic adaptations in the past with Tom Cruise as the lead, starting with Jack Reacher in 2012 and followed by Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016.

Finally he clarified that he is deeply involved in the development of this character: “Reacher is part of my life once a year and I don’t intend to stop. Amazon is very committed to this project and we will continue to work on it for a long time.” To date, each season is drawn from a different novel: the fourth, recently released on Prime Video starting August 12, 2026, follows the protagonist grappling with a very delicate case after witnessing a woman’s suicide on a subway train.
