It seems that “the price of truth” is 16.7 billion dollars. This is the figure that, while not seeking a potentially devastating ruling, Meta and Mark Zuckerberg have agreed to pay to several American states to settle the lawsuit focused on accusations that the extent of damage to the mental health of minors caused by social platforms like Facebook and Instagram was concealed. In the settlement, Meta did not admit liability, but it also agreed to modify its apps for teenage users in the near future.
And as you may know, The Social: The Price of Truth is also the title of the Aaron Sorkin film, the ideal follow-up to The Social Network, which reconstructs, in essence, how the case that culminated in this settlement came about. The film indeed tells the story of Frances Haugen, the Meta engineer who, in 2021, leaked thousands of internal documents (known as The Facebook Files), revealing that the company was aware of the psychological harms caused by its social networks but had chosen profit over safety and the health of its users.
In Haugen’s role in the film is Mikey Madison of Anora, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal journalist who first wrote about the affair. As is well known, the actor playing Zuckerberg isn’t the Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network; it’s Jeremy Strong, who has described the script of this movie as one of the best he has ever read, capable of addressing our times and what is happening in the world.
Here is the new trailer for The Social: The Price of Truth, which we will be able to see in Italian cinemas starting from the next October 8.
