Following the overwhelming success of Baby Reindeer that introduced her to half the world, Jessica Gunning is ready to return to Netflix with a role quite different. According to Deadline, the actress will be one of four leads in Feral, a new series on the platform that is expected to blend thriller and dark comedy.
Feral: The Early Details of the Potential Series with Jessica Gunning
According to the initial details leaked, the series, conceived by Jude Mack and directed by Emma Freeman, will be based on the 1987 novel of the same name written by Shirley Conran and will tell a survival story set on a deadly tropical island. At the center of the plot will be four women who are very different from one another, forced to set aside differences, insecurities, and vanity when their husbands, all executives of major mining companies, are kidnapped. The question that will thread the story is simple yet not reassuring: will the four women be able to collaborate and survive despite their deep differences?
Jessica Gunning will play Annie
In Feral, Jessica Gunning will portray Annie, a woman who appears calm and dutiful, who has laid aside her ambitions to devote herself to raising her four children. This choice is also conditioned by her husband Duncan, described as a domineering man. The character therefore represents a clear departure from Martha, the obsessed and tormented woman that Gunning played in Baby Reindeer. If in Richard Gadd’s miniseries the actress brought to life an unsettling and deeply fragile figure, the new project seems to offer her the opportunity to explore a leading character facing an extreme situation and with the need to reinvent herself to survive.
From the Baby Reindeer phenomenon to new projects
Her return to Netflix comes after what was a major turning point in Jessica Gunning’s career. Baby Reindeer, which landed on the platform in April 2024, quickly became a global phenomenon largely thanks to word-of-mouth, turning into one of the most discussed and surprising titles of the past few years. The performance cemented Gunning internationally, helping her to win numerous prestigious awards, including Emmy, Golden Globe, BAFTA TV Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Independent Spirit Award, and Actor Award. After Baby Reindeer, the actress further broadened her filmography, working on projects such as The Christophers by Steven Soderbergh, Sunny Dancer, alongside Bella Ramsey, and The Magic Faraway Tree. Among her upcoming projects are Anxious People, directed by Marc Forster, and the Apple TV series Berlin Noir.
