Resident Evil Boosts Spanish Box Office

The Spanish box office improved this past weekend by one million euros compared to the figures from seven days earlier, which had been among the worst of the year. One of the “culprits” behind this improvement is ‘Resident Evil’, which arrives in our country leading the box office with 2,064,146 euros in revenue.

The numbers are in line with what the film has achieved in the United States and other markets. It is clear that Sony hit the mark by entrusting Zach Cregger with the reboot of the popular video game saga. While it doesn’t reach spectacular numbers, it represents a box office that is more than respectable for a film of this type.

The second spot goes to another weekly premiere, specifically ‘Coyote contra Acme’. The Warner film, which in the United States was distributed by Ketchup Entertainment has reached our country thanks to Beta Ficción. The result is 642,850 euros, a box office at the lower end of expectations for what a film like this could achieve, although the numbers still do not support David Zaslav’s decision not to release it in order to carry out a bookkeeping adjustment.

In third place, after four weeks in theaters, ‘Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa’ drops from the top, though it collects another 435,055 euros for a Spanish total of 6,785,996. It seems it will have no trouble surpassing seven million in the coming days.

‘La Odisea’ by Nolan in its tenth week in theaters posts a strong fourth place at the box office, taking in another 402,537 euros and raising the total in Spain to 38,271,408 euros.

For the first time almost since its release, a film manages to separate ‘La odisea’ from ‘Spider-Man’ at the box office. The two films had been moving together since release with nearly twin results though with a two-week gap. We are talking about ‘El ser querido’, which in its fourth week reaches fifth place with 319,247 euros. Its total in our country is 3.676 million euros. It seems unlikely that Sorogoyen will surpass the box office of ‘As bestas’ with this film, although it will remain as its second most successful film.

In sixth place, finally, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The film has already grossed 39.8 million euros at the Spanish box office, of which 307,506 correspond to this weekend, its eighth on the screens. It is close to surpassing the round figure of 40 million.

‘Tiempo de victoria’ also makes the top 10

We continue toward the lower end of the chart with the second week of ‘Prácticamente magia 2’, which sinks to seventh place with barely 262,060 euros, marking the trend you had been analyzing: Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s film has performed far better in the United States than elsewhere in the world.

In eighth place on the box office we find the week’s third premiere to crack the top 10. We are talking about ‘Tiempo de victoria’, a Franco-British film starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser set during World War II. It grossed 211,482 euros.

The ranking closes with two familiar titles: ‘Insidious: Fuera del más allá’ in its fifth week (183,503€) and the Spanish ‘Cronos’, which in three weeks has reached 1,630,630 euros with 156,150€ this past weekend.
