Sony has successfully rebooted the Resident Evil franchise. The days of Milla Jovovich’s films and their numerous side stories are behind us. This franchise reboot embraces a far more terrifying and impersonal tone, guided by Zach Cregger, the director of the acclaimed ‘Weapons’. The result, so far, is more than satisfactory.
The film opened at the United States box office, dominating the weekend with $60 million. It is, by far, the best debut for any entry in the saga, and it has also managed to surpass the expectations that the distributor itself has progressively updated, initially aiming for $40 million.
Adding international box office, ‘Resident Evil’ debuts with $108.3 million worldwide. Promising figures that bode well for the film’s profitability, given a budget close to $80 million.
As expected, the majority of the audience drawn to the film was male and young, and the film earned a B+ on CinemaScore. In terms of records, it nearly matches in its opening the entire box office achieved by ‘Resident Evil 4: Afterlife’, which until now has been the saga’s most successful entry. It is also the best opening for Zach Cregger, who continues to build an impeccable track record when it comes to blockbuster openings.
The Spell of ‘Practically Magic 2’ Wanes Quickly
In second place at the U.S. box office we find ‘Practically Magic 2’, which in its second week drops back to the second spot losing no less than 59.5% of its opening gross. A steep decline that does not bode well for Warner’s film’s trajectory.
Nevertheless, the distributor can be pleased with the $50 million the film has earned (with $12.1 million this weekend), because the international box office for Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s film is much weaker: only $26.8 million for a global total of $76.8 million.
Proof of how soft the box office is this September is that, next, we still see ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’ in third and fourth place. We are talking about two films that have already been in theaters for eight and ten weeks and they’re still there. In the case of the former, an extra $6.5 million for a U.S. total of $944 million and a worldwide total of $2.478 billion. The film cements itself as the third-highest grossing film in history, but it seems unlikely it will overtake the second place.
For Nolan’s film, we’re talking about another $4.9 million in receipts, for a U.S. total of $609 million, and a worldwide total of $1.721 billion. In this case, the movie has managed to climb a position on the all-time box office list, reaching eleventh place. It is $145 million away from breaking into the top 10, something that seems unlikely to achieve at this point, though if it did, it would be thanks to its strength in the international market.
In fifth place, ‘Coyote vs. Acme’, the film that David Zaslav discarded and which earns another $4.5 million at the box office, for a total of $54 million in the United States, and $79.8 million worldwide. Reasonably solid numbers for the film that had a $70 million budget and that Warner sold to Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million.

The sixth place in the weekend box office is occupied by ‘Runner’ in its second week. We reiterate that it has nothing to do with the movie Prime Video released almost simultaneously. It drops 50.8% in its second week with 3.1 million for a total of 11.98 million.
Seventh place for the premiere of ‘Daniel’, a religious film about the eponymous prophet starring Mena Massoud, the young man who brought Aladdin to life in the live-action movie and who subsequently disappeared from sight (in reality he did speak out, complaining that no one wanted to hire him). $3.14 million in its debut isn’t too bad for a film of this genre, which was released in only 1,525 theaters.
In eighth place, another re-release. This time ‘The Transformers: The Movie’, a 1986 animated film that returned to cinemas for its 40th anniversary and that, wow, grossed $3.1 million. The world of re-releases has gotten completely out of hand.
Ninth place for another debut, the independent ‘The Weight’ which, with Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe in the cast, opens with $2.3 million.
Closing the top 10 is the horror film ‘Buddy’, which keeps adding on its fourth week: $1.9 million for a US total of $24.8 million and no international sales at the moment.
This is the week’s box office tally. Next week the US lineup is packed with premieres, though at first glance all mid-budget: like Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime’ or Brad Pitt’s new film, ‘In the Heart of the Beast’. We’ll be here to bring you the news.
