The DC Comics cinematic universe is becoming somewhat hard to follow, and one of the company’s most acclaimed superheroes makes it even more so. The guardian of Gotham City has not yet taken shape in James Gunn’s envisioned world, and that makes sense given the success that The Batman has garnered: right now, Matt Reeves’ version of the bat is the one with the strongest commercial appeal.
The solution for many, and something that has been discussed at times, would involve making that iteration of the character the Batman by definition of the film universe, but Robert Pattinson has something to say on the matter. The vigilante’s own actor doesn’t think it’s as simple as we might assume: not due to the plot or studio concerns, but because of the character’s temperament and the isolation he radiates in the role.
Few Friends
Pattinson has spoken about Bruce Wayne and the difficulties involved in portraying him in a recent interview. In relation to this, he was asked how he would view crossing paths with Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s best friend. His answer was candid: “I think it would be quite difficult to portray this version of Bruce outside his world,” the actor explains. “He’s one of those characters, I suppose due to the length of shoots, whose tone gets inside you. I remember that happened to me last time as well; it took me a while [to adjust to him]. You’re kept in the dark all the time. Light as well as emotionally, I don’t see anything for months. It affects you; you feel strange afterward.”
The Reeves’ version of the bat is lacking the support of the Bat-Family. There is no Robin to help him open up emotionally, and the character tries to chart his path outside the shadows in the first installment. We don’t know what direction he’ll take in The Batman: Part II, but if Pattinson doesn’t see a clear crossing of characters, then this Bruce will continue to live isolated in his own world for a long time.
A Different Gotham
The plan James Gunn has for revealing his take on the bat is hard to pin down. The idea was for him to headline his own film, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but the project remains in an unknown state. The last time we heard about it it was slated for a 2028 release, but with The Batman: Part II delayed to the same year, doubts have arisen about the movie, which, for now, have not been cleared.
