The perfect police officer exists and we need him back on the streets. Amazon has spent years keeping the license for ‘Robocop’ in reserve, waiting to embark on a project with it, and the truth is that the wait is growing long. But we must not despair for much longer, because the company is taking steps, little by little to give it form. And today’s step is one of real significance.
The news is twofold and substantial. The first part is that Amazon, after lengthy deliberations, has decided that the next reboot of the franchise will take the form of a TV series. It has the legendary James Wan aboard as a producer to bring it to life, which could add a touch of horror to the project. It wouldn’t be surprising; the life and death of the robotic officer could be explored from a terrifying perspective that might add a new dimension to the character. But this remains speculative for now.
The New Face of RoboCop
The other bit of news is more concrete and allows us to put a face to the series. The famous robot police officer from Texas will be played by Dan Stevens, who stood out as Matthew Crawley in ‘Downton Abbey’. He will become the half-human, half-robot being that once answered to the name Alex Murphy, but now everyone knows him as RoboCop. That said, we don’t know whether this will mean revisiting his origin as in ‘RoboCop’ or simply ignoring the new face and expanding the universe of the original films.
The character’s return comes after a long absence from theaters and streaming platforms, though he hasn’t disappeared entirely. In 2023 the license spawned a video game that was very well received by critics and audiences, ‘RoboCop: Rogue City’, and it was followed by a paid expansion in 2025 to capitalize on its success among players. If anything has shown, it’s that people want Murphy back on the streets.

The android faced in the films a gigantic conglomerate of tech companies that controlled every aspect of people’s public and private lives. Now Amazon is the one taking charge of the franchise. The irony of this situation isn’t lost on us.
