The new feature film from Rodrigo Sorogoyen, titled The Beloved Being (L’Essere Amato) and starring an extraordinary Javier Bardem, has been designated Film of the Critics by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Critics – SNCCI. Here is the reason:
An exhilarating example of cinema within cinema, haunted by the ghosts of past colonialism and daily paternalism. Sorogoyen, together with Isabel Peña, crafts a masterful script that speaks solely of power relations—a power of one people over another, of a director over his actors, of a father over his daughter. Of us all.
Unjustly overlooked by the jury of the last Cannes Film Festival, where, according to many, it deserved the Palme d’Or, the film is part of the program of the 2026 Rome Film Festival (Festa del Cinema di Roma), which placed it in the Best of 2026 section. Accompanying it to the capital was Bardem himself, who also received at the Festival the Career Award, which was handed to him by Paolo Sorrentino.
Scheduled for release on November 16 by Movies Inspired, The Beloved Being (L’Essere Amato) tells the story of a renowned Spanish director who, after spending several years in the United States, returns home to shoot a new film. The man, who has a rather turbulent past, offers the lead role to his daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo), who has basically been estranged since she was a child. Obviously it will not be easy for the two to learn to get along, because some wounds take time to heal. Javier Bardem, who won the Oscar for his performance in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men, is also the executive producer of The Beloved Being, about which we watch the trailer once again.
