Stefano Bessoni, a Romics Gold for a Varied and Multiform Career
Stefano Bessoni, trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, over the decades has encompassed several identities: illustrator, of course, but also director and animator with a penchant for stop-motion, not to mention his years of teaching in media, both at the NUCT of the era, and currently for the three-year Illustration and Animation program at the IED in Rome. His imagery begins from the concept of wunderkammer and feeds on entomology, anatomy, science and fairy tales. He has collaborated with Pupi Avati (and his son Alvise) for concept art and storyboard, then to sign visionary feature films such as Fragments of Inaccurate Sciences, Imago Mortis and Krokodyle. In love with the fantastic, he has published illustrated books such as Alice Underground, Homunculus, Wunderkammer, Pinocchio, as well as the illustrated biographies of two of his beacons: Tim Burton and Peter Greenaway, for whom he created the imagery for the volume “He Read Deep Into The Night”. Celebrated by the National Museum of Cinema in Turin with the solo show The Mole of Wonders, in 2024 he headlined another festival appearance at Cartoons on the Bay, Stop-motion and Other Inaccurate Sciences.
The Romics, in addition to awarding him the Romics d’Oro alla carriera, also dedicates one to him, always accessible in Hall 8 during the fair days, Stefano Bessoni – Illustration, Animation and Cinema. Stefano will also discuss on Friday, October 2, with journalist Luca Rocco, again in Hall 8, in a session titled Stefano Bessoni: Illustration and Stop Motion, while on Sunday the 4th he will chat at 12 with Max Giovagnoli on the Movie Village stage (Hall 5), in a panel that will trace his multifaceted path. There are planned signing sessions at Hall 7 (Comics City / Romics Bookshop) at 12:20 on Friday, at 10:30 on Saturday and at 11 on Sunday.
