Sam Heughan Drops the Kilt After 11 Years on Outlander, Next TV Project Revealed

Sam Heughan is ready for his next TV venture after more than a decade spent portraying Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander, which came to a close last May after eight seasons. The Scottish actor has signed with Paramount+ for one of the leading roles in Ascent, a thriller from the Skyfall screenwriter John Logan, whose cast already features Oscar winner Viola Davis (Fences, How to Get Away with Murder).

Ascent: the plot of the series and Sam Heughan’s role

Set against the world of global corporate crises and crisis management, Ascent follows Davis in the part of Catriona Vail, a brilliant problem-solver for major corporations. Her job involves handling crises and delicate situations for billionaire clients, but her ability to control every detail is tested when her daughter—with whom she has a strained relationship—finds herself in danger. Thus, Catriona is forced to turn the same ruthless talents that have made her indispensable into weapons.

Heughan will portray Conal, one of the top agents at Ascent Ventures. Charming and able to shift gears with ease, Conal employs cunning and ruthlessness to complete his assignments, always deriving a thrill from the success of a mission. For the actor, who will be on set alongside Davis next year as filming begins in Los Angeles, the role in Ascent joins his work on the MGM+ geopolitical thriller Embassy, where he will partner with Anna Kendrick and Oscar winner J.K. Simmons.
