It premiered at San Sebastián and at the London Festival in 2025, and in the United States, where it debuted some time ago, it has earned strong praise from critics: we are talking about Bad Apples, a dark comedy that will arrive in our cinemas on September 10, and below we present the official Italian trailer.
The film, which stars the Irish actress Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, follows Maria, a passionate and idealistic elementary school teacher working at a school in Somerset, England. Maria is determined to convey to her ten-year-old students all the zeal she feels for her work, but every effort is tested by a particularly rebellious and unmanageable child, capable of turning the classroom into a small battleground. With her career increasingly at risk and the situation spiraling, Maria allows herself to be drawn into a series of ever bolder choices, until she commits the unimaginable: kidnapping the “rotten apple” that is rotting her class and locking it away in her basement. After this reckless act, which at first Maria thinks she can somehow repair, her class blossoms again, colleagues congratulate her, and the parents are enthusiastic: hence the gesture that seemed to be a mistake to erase as soon as possible begins to dangerously resemble the perfect solution.
Bad Apples was written by Jess O’Kane based on the Swedish author Rasmus Lindgren’s book “De Oönskade,” while the directing chair is held by Jonatan Etzler. Here is the official Italian trailer for the film.
