Netflix confirms that filming for Scooby-Doo: Origins, its new live-action series based on the iconic characters created by Hanna-Barbera in the late 1960s, has wrapped. A modern reimagining of the legendary mystery-solving gang and their very special canine companion, the franchise’s first live-action installment will debut on the streaming service in 2027. In the meantime, a series of behind-the-scenes photographs reveal the cast, including the puppy chosen by the production to portray Scooby-Doo.
The Plot of Scooby-Doo: Origins TV Series
Written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, Scooby-Doo: Origins is set during one final summer camping trip, where longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne (portrayed by Tanner Hagen and McKenna Grace) become entangled in a chilling mystery surrounding a solitary, lost Great Dane puppy—perhaps a witness to a supernatural murder. Joining them are Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson), a pragmatic local girl with a passion for science, and Freddy (Maxwell Jenkins), the quirky yet captivating newcomer. Together they set out to crack the case, only to be dragged into a terrifying nightmare that threatens to unearth secrets each of them would prefer to keep buried.
The series was filmed in and around Atlanta, locations already used by several other Netflix productions, including Stranger Things. This marks the first time that, within the franchise (which includes five live-action films, three of which were for television), the canine lead is played by a real Great Dane. In addition, the production team includes the industry veteran Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Arrow, The Flash, Riverdale, You), who stated: “One of my first jobs in Hollywood, and one of my favorites, involved sitting next to Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera as they signed off on the animation cels of their cartoons. Josh, Scott and the entire Midnight Radio team have brought to life a story capable of capturing their extraordinary spirit and their brilliant creation.”
