Scott Patterson’s Cookbook: Recipes Honoring A Mom for a Friend

Scott Patterson owes a lot to his Luke in Gilmore Girls, and it is also thanks to that character that, years later, today the actor has been able to publish a cookbook. His passion for diners was born long before he played Luke Danes in Gilmore Girls, but he is one of the most appreciated characters of his career and portraying him perhaps has also been destiny. And it is also a homage to Luke that his first cookbook, titled Dishes from the Diner: Classic All-Day Recipes, was born. Some of the recipes, after all, clearly mirror Luke’s diner and his inviting dishes that for years accompanied the chatter of Rory and Lorelai.

Scott Patterson has always had a soft spot for diners, even before owning one (for pretend) in Gilmore Girls. He told People that he grew up with “a diner culture” in southern New Jersey and eventually created a cookbook as a tribute both to his upbringing and to the character he portrayed for years in Gilmore Girls from 2000 to 2007 and in the Netflix revival in 2016.

Regarding the new publication, he explained: “I’ve always been a food enthusiast, I love diner food. I think it is the quintessence of comfort food, and taking part in a TV series that perfectly embodies this concept I believe has been a natural progression and a perfect match. Playing the owner of a diner on TV is a great job. It’s important to have a central gathering place where all the characters come together with a certain regularity, and that is the real focal point of the show.”

Among the various recipes proposed by Patterson in his Dishes from the Diner: Classic All-Day Recipes appear classic dishes such as the tuna melt sandwich, cheeseburger, and Cobb Salad, as well as references to Gilmore Girls like the extra-chocolate pancakes perfect for getting over heartbreak, which Lorelai orders for her daughter after the breakup with Dean in the first season. Another recipe that nods to Luke’s touch is the four-slice Special French Toast, or the Yale Special (a name invented by Rory) composed of a sausage tied with bacon, Miss Patty’s Founders Day Punch, and Norman Mailer Iced Tea.

Years after its original airing, Gilmore Girls continues to be one of the titles most loved by the public, who each year indulge in a rewatch. The reason? According to Scott Patterson: “It’s because it’s so accessible, it’s really funny, there are so many fantastic, clever and fast lines and you basically have to rewatch it multiple times to catch them all, precisely because of the show’s brisk rhythm and the speed of the dialogue.” He also praised the characters: “I believe one of the main strengths of this series is the presence of many unique characters, each with their own personality. Watching a single episode, you find yourself immersed in a kaleidoscope of characters, humor, lines, moving and nostalgic moments in which everyone can identify themselves.”
