When we first heard about Scrooge and the Christmas Spirits, another adaptation of the immortal A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, with Ti West directing, we imagined a version of the tale that leaned much more into horror, and the initial images did not disappoint, beginning with the “dear old” Ebenezer being pulled into the bed, just as happened to Johnny Depp in his screen debut, A Nightmare on Elm Street. And he certainly did not disappoint either, delivering a chameleonic performance that reminded us of his finest turns. This highly anticipated film, featuring a cast that includes Sam Claflin, , Daisy Ridley and Rupert Grint, which will hit our cinemas on November 12 thanks to Eagle Pictures, has just released a new Italian trailer, well worth watching.
Scrooge and the Christmas Spirits: The Story
As (perhaps) everyone knows, if only from having seen some film adapted from Dickens’s tale, A Christmas Carol take place in London in 1843 and tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly banker, stingy and misanthropic who despises Christmas and ignores the suffering of others, a human Grinch who refuses to celebrate the holiday and spurns the invitation of his poor and only relative, Fred, who works for him. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge receives a visitation from the ghost of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him of the consequences of his selfish life. Marley is condemned to wander for eternity, bearing chains, a symbol of his selfish actions. Scrooge is then visited by three spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. These spirits show Scrooge the consequences of his actions and push him to reflect on his life. In the end, Scrooge redeems himself, becoming a generous and kind person and manages to embrace the true meaning of Christmas and the people who are close to him. This remains the story of Ti West’s film, from which we also expect to feel real fear.
