It has been a few years now that, from time to time, people bring up Sicario 3, the sequel to Sicario and to Soldado, directed respectively in 2015 by Denis Villeneuve and in 2018 by our Stefano Sollima. The topic is being revived by Josh Brolin, who in both films portrayed the enigmatic Matt Graver, the head of a task force determined to stop drug trafficking at the Mexico–United States border. Since the release of the second film a lot has passed, and above all Brolin has become a superstar, having appeared in the Dune films and portraying Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Both Sicario and Soldado were written by Taylor Sheridan, and it seems the screenwriter, Oscar-nominated for Hell or High Water, is at work on the script for a third chapter of the saga also starring Benicio Del Toro. This rumor has just been confirmed by our Josh, who not only swore up and down that Sicario 3 is in preparation, but also that filming would start soon. What more could we ask for?
The actor spoke about the new film in an interview given during the promotion of The Dog Stars to Screenrant, which ponders who will direct, noting that Denis Villeneuve might not be available, given that in a few years he has become one of the most sought-after auteurs in Hollywood and beyond and his near future includes, first and foremost, the next Bond movie, but you never know… In any case, some time ago someone had spoken about the project’s involvement of Christopher McQuarrie, it is not known in what capacity—screenwriter, director or simply producer. The fact remains that Josh Brolin could not have lied. It remains to be seen who will be in the cast of Sicario 3 and whether, for instance, Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt will return, with Blunt having appeared in Sicario but not in Soldado.
