The third season of Silo has concluded by revealing the greatest lie ever told since the first episode of the first season, a detail that will surely not go unnoticed during the upcoming fourth and final season, slated for the summer of 2027 on Apple TV. A terrifying lie that has been told for centuries to the inhabitants of the Silo, and whose repercussions could be catastrophic for those who work there if the truth were to emerge. Warning: the following will tell you more, but we recommend proceeding only after finishing the third season.
Silo 3: What If Earth Were Actually Safe?
The 18th Silo has clearly shown that everyone sent outside to clean meets certain death, or almost. The lone exception was Juliette Nichols, protected by a different seal that would allow her to reach another Silo, 17, uncovering a bitter truth: that Silo was almost completely destroyed and the only survivors are in grave difficulty. During the third season, we also learned the technical details that led to the extinction of 17, which occurred not because of the toxic air but by human hands.
As Bernard had suspected, all that happens underground is directed by Silo 1, operated by humans who decide who should live and who should die. If it had not been for the timely intervention of the mechanical department and what Juliette learned in 17, even Silo 18 would have faced the Safeguard. In the final episode of the third season we discover that what really killed the inhabitants of Silo 17 was not the poison already present in the air, but the orders from Silo 1, which used armed drones and others equipped with poison—the same poison they presumably used to kill anyone sent outside to clean beyond their own Silo.
This means that all those years spent in that deep bunker were accompanied by lie after lie. No one knows why they are underground, but everyone is forced to adhere to the Pact, never challenging the Founders’ motives. Following the 17 rebellion, thousands of people reached the surface, proving that Earth is safe. If the outside had truly been toxic, most of them would have died within minutes, as is usually the case during the cleanup phase. Instead, Troy chooses to kill them with firearms after several minutes of deliberation. If Earth had really been toxic, there would have been no point in such violent intervention, because they would have all died anyway in a short time.
When Silo 18 manages to disable the gas distribution pipe, Troy orders the activation of an External Safeguard 18, keeping the Silo under fire from armed drones. A murky tactic that hints even more at a bitter truth: outside the Silos, is Earth habitable? And then why do they persist in living underground? The fourth season will necessarily have to address this aspect of the plot as well.
